India has a total of 18 Biosphere Reserves as of late 2025. Twelve of these have also been designated by UNESCO as part of its World Network of Biosphere Reserves.

In 2000, the Khangchendzonga National Park was officially designated as a Biosphere Reserve by the Government of India. And in 2018, the Khangchendzonga Biosphere Reserve was formally included in UNESCO's World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR).
